My Backpack
Several years ago I elected to buy and carry a backpack to school everyday. I had not owned a backpack since I was a student many years ago. Since organization has always been a struggle, I wanted a "home" for things I had commonly missed-placed; coffee cup, snacks, keys, day planner, loose mail, important notes, sketchbook, bible, pens and pencils, etc...
I don't buy things too often, but when I do I tend to by things of quality that will last a while. The aesthetic of the thing (like a backpack) happens to be important to me as well. After several trips to local stores that carry backpacks, I chose a fancy NorthFace brand backpack from Eastern Mountain Sports. The backpack was originally $130 dollars, but I bought it on sale...40% off I recall. The backpack was sporty-looking, and was very well designed.
The pack was waterproof, with loads of zippered compartments. The outside of the pack had holders for my coffee and water, a weather tight compartment (and hole) for my iPod, big zippers that did't catch, a waste buckle to distribute the weight and an air/mesh design to prevent nasty back sweat! To my surprise, the pack also had a sweet whistle....win.
I have now owned the pack for four years, and I can honestly say has become a comfort to me! I take it everywhere, even if nothing is in it...just in case. :) In a weird way, my backpack is an extension of me. We have been cross-country, on planes and trains and cars and trucks, and bikes and hikes. I packed a full week of clothing and supplies to California, and carried-on the plane!
I knew I chose well when I was watching the show "River Monsters" on the Discovery Channel and noticed the host was traveling the WORLD with the same bag! Is my affinity for my pack superficial? Odd? Delusional? Maybe....but I do love my backpack!
